Changing the oil and filter on your Ford

Changing the oil on your car is a very important part of maintaining your Ford. Regular oil changes will help your Ford drive better and last for longer. Changing the oil is simple and is done in a few easy steps.

Changing the oil is a very important to maintaining ford

  1. Jack the front of your car up or put it on a hoist. On the bottom of your engine, which is known as the oil sump you will see a hexagonal shaped plug, known as the sump plug. After placing an oil catch pan under the sump, undo the sump plug and let all of the used oil drain out
  2. Once the oil has completely drained out, you will need to remove your oil filter, which is located on the side of the engine. You will need a filter removing tool to do so. Once the filter is removed, drain the oil out of the filter and dispose of the oil and used filter properly.Remove sump plug - Let all of the used oil drain out - Remove oil filter from ford car
  3. Before fitting your new oil filter, remove the plastic film over the part of the filter that screws on, and lubricate the rubber seal on the filter with some engine oil.
  4. Screw the oil filter on and do it up tight by hand, ensuring that you do not over tighten the filter as it can do damage to the filter or housing.
  5. Put the plug back into your sump and make sure it is done up tight. Make sure you do not cross thread the sump plug, and do not over tighten it. Some sump plugs have a small gasket that goes on them, if so it is a good idea to replace that too.
  6. Now that your filter and sump plug are on you can now fill the engine up with oil from the oil filler cap.
  7. Do not put all of your oil straight in. You need to add the oil bit by bit and continue to check it on the oil dipstick. Remember the oil takes time to drain from the top of the motor to the sump, so give it a little time in between pouring it in before checking.
  8. Once the oil is filled to the correct level on the dip stick, its then safe to put the oil cap back on and start the vehicle. Let the car run for a small amount of time to get all of the oil pumping through the engine. Now close sump plug & filter - Fill engine oil from oil filter cap - Check oil lavel with dipstick
  9. Switch the engine off and then pull the dipstick out, and check it again. The oil level may have dropped as the oil has now been pumped through the motor and filled the filter up. If needed removed the oil cap, top up the oil and replace the cap.
  10. Now it is sake to lower the car off the jack and you have finished the job!
